Heavy rains for next 24 hours, possible tidal swells

Met Office says heavy rains are expected for most of the country, with possible thunderstorms for some parts of the country.

A forecast says that surface winds will vary between south / south-westerly 8 – 18 miles per hour in southern atolls and west / north-westerly 15 – 25 miles per hour elsewhere. Winds may increase 40 – 45 miles per hour during showers.

Seas are expected to be moderate to rough in southern atolls and generally rough elsewhere. Tidal swells may hit some islands during high tide period.

Met had issued a yellow alert, issuing caution on sea travel and for preparation.

MNDF appeal

MNDF has issued an appeal to exercise precautionary measures on sea transport. MNDF said that vessel owners must ensure that their vessels had adequate amount of life jackets, functioning communication devices, pump systems were up to date and not to fill vessels above their mandated levels.

Additionally, MNDF cautioned water sport organizers to prioritize on safety and to hold their activities only after checking weather conditions.

Police appeal

Police had also issued an appeal, urging road safety measures and against driving at high speeds when roads are flooded.
