Over 70,000 students from all across the archipelago headed back to school for the new academic year on Sunday.
According to the education ministry, 7,700 teachers would welcome over 78,000 students in 217 different schools.
Most schools had completed repair before re-opening Sunday while schools in 17 islands introduced multi-grades. The government had given special emphasis to cater teachers and text books before the start of the new year.
After the government took over pre-schooling last year, around 12,454 children would begin pre-school this year.
Government had also undertaken special efforts to replace expat teachers with locals, and this year would see nearly 75 percent of local teachers.
Under the new curriculum which was adopted in 2014, 158 schools would teach for students through grades 1 to 10. Over 30 schools would teach from key stage through grade 12 while 35 schools would cater to grades 8 through 12 with two schools dedicated to secondary schooling.
Maldives became the first country in this region to provide free preschool education. Providing a year of preschool was on the development road map by 2030.
Education ministry had said two years of preschool will be guaranteed in the Maldives even before the start of the plan for the next fifteen years.
