President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom Monday inaugurated the newly established clean water system in Meemu Atoll Dhiggaru island.
During the President's ongoing visit to Meemu Atoll, Environment Minister Thorig Ibrahim had also kick-started the sewage system project in Dhiggaru.
Two plants set up by the state run Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) would produce 40 tons of fresh water daily for 202 houses in the island.
State run utility company Fenaka Corporation has been tasked with the maintenance of the plants.
MWSC has also been tasked with establishing the Dhiggaru sewage system, a project worth MVR28 million which the company must complete before September.
The government is also carrying out two other projects in Dhiggaru including shore protection and a boat dock.
The President is scheduled to visit Naalaafushi and Mulak islands during his tour of Meemu Atoll.
