Authorities on Wednesday seized the passport of religiously conservative Adhaalath Party (AP) council member Sidhatha Shareef upon her arrival in the Maldives after a trip aboard.
The shadow health minister of the opposition alliance Maldives United Opposition (MUO) told Avas that her passport was taken after being briefly questioned by police at the airport on Thursday morning.
"I don't know why my passport has been taken. There was no indication that my passport would be taken or I wasn't allowed to travel even when I left the Maldives," Sidhatha explained.
As the police were not immediately available for comment, the reason for the travel ban remains unclear.
However, police last year, had confiscated Sidhatha's mobile phone after MUO established a fund to provide legal aid for opposition supporters arrested during protests.
