Adhaalath urges govt to lift travel ban on top member

Religiously conservative Adhaalath Party (AP) Saturday called on the authorities to lift the travel ban on council member Sidhatha Shareef.

Authorities had seized Sidhatha's passport on Wednesday upon her arrival in the Maldives after a trip aboard.

The shadow health minister of the opposition alliance Maldives United Opposition (MUO) had told Avas that her passport was taken after being briefly questioned by police at the airport on Thursday morning.

Adhaalath in a statement condemned the government move which is said was to "impede its efforts to groom future political leaders and strengthen ties with the international community."

"So we call on the relevant government authorities to immediately release Sidhatha's passport," the statement read.

As the police were not immediately available for comment, the reason for the travel ban remains unclear.

However, police last year, had confiscated Sidhatha's mobile phone after MUO established a fund to provide legal aid for opposition supporters arrested during protests.
