Expat assualts disabled local man

An undocumented expatriate living in Gaaf Alif Kolamaafushi island has assaulted a local man with autism, in a violent outburst last Wednesday.

The mother of the injured man, told Avas that the expatriate had insulted the man and assaulted him while he was on his way to work at the Fenaka office on a nearby island.

Alham Waheed, the injured man, had found employment at Fenaka under the government's initiative to employ special needs people.

Some islanders report that Alham was insulted almost daily by the expatriate on his commute, and that the foreigner had stepped in front of Alham on Wednesday, causing Alham to push him away. The push prompted a violent response from the expatriate, who proceeded to assault Alham.

The fight escalated to the point where the expatriate, who is a Bangladeshi national, attempted to stab Alham with a pen. He however, fled the scene after a local councilor stepped in to try and defend the victim. Alham's mother is also employed at the local council office.

After Alham was treated at the Kolamaafushi Health Center, the incident was reported to the police. However, the expat was released due to an administrative oversight.

Both the police and the island council were not immediately available for comment.

However, several eyewitnesses shared the incident with Avas, expressing concerns over the fact that a man who was prone to violence was allowed to walk free in the island.
