Ex-Islamic minister quits Adhaalath Party

Former Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has left the religiously conservative and the no opposition Adhaalath Party.

Shaheem, who is currently the chancellor of the Islamic University, requested the removal of his name from the party register on February 14.

Shaheem later said his decision was down to his differences with current party ideologies.

"Allah willing, my decision won't affect on any of the religious work I do. It is one of my greatest goals to remain in the service of Islam and our nation as long as Allah keeps me healthy," Shaheem stated.

Shaheem also insisted that he harboured no ill will towards any members of his former party.

Shaheem had resigned from his post as the Islamic Minister after disputes between his former party and the government.

Shaheem was appointed as the chancellor of the Islamic University by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom last year.
