Jailed opposition Jumhoory Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim who was sanctioned to travel to Singapore for medical treatment has left to Germany, his legal team revealed Tuesday.
The business tycoon convicted of bribery in late August was granted medical leave to travel to Singapore where he had undergone a minor heart surgery in September. Despite his leave expiring in late September, the former lawmaker had not returned claiming that no airline would allow him on board an air craft due to his ailing condition.
However, his legal team in a statement on Tuesday said Germany had granted a humanitarian entry permit for Gasim to seek medical care. The statement claimed that doctors in Singapore had been treating Gasim under close consultation with his doctor in Germany who had been treating him for years.
Maldives correctional service meanwhile has denied an extension of Gasim's medical leave while police have launched efforts to bring in the business tycoon.
Gasim is serving over three years in prison after being convicted of attempting to bribe government lawmakers ahead of the censure motion against parliament speaker Abdullah Maseeh in late March.
