Education ministry has dispatched a team to convince the teachers of a prominent government school in the capital Male to end the strike after one of their colleagues was suspended over a scuffle with a student.

A teachers had been involved in a scuffle with a student in Majeediyyaa School on Monday for which the teacher had been suspended.

The teachers decided to go on strike over the unfair suspension demanding better protection and safety for the teachers.

A student had reportedly tried to enter another class but had been stopped by the teacher. The student then had assaulted the teacher. The teacher had shoved the student in self-defense. But the school had suspended the teacher which had sparked outrage among the rest of the teachers.

The school's leading teacher told AVAS that the teachers had refused to attend classes in the morning session.

"The morning session is now at an end. As far as I know none of the teachers has attended class. Teachers are extremely concerned by this incident," the lead teacher said.

Some of the teachers protesting outside the school gates said their concerns have not been addressed and would continue the strike.

State education minister Ahmed Shafeeu said the ministry has now stepped in to resolve the incident and get the teachers to end the strike.

It remains unclear whether the school had taken any action against the student.
