Suspended expat teacher quits, leaves Maldives after threats

The expatriate teacher suspended over a scuffle with a student has quit and left the Maldives on Monday after he was reportedly threatened.

The yet unidentified teacher had been involved in a scuffle with a student in Majeediyyaa School on Monday for which the teacher had been suspended.

The school's lead teacher told AVAS that the mathematics teacher had quit and returned to his home country along with his wife who had also been teaching in the same school.

The couple had decided to leave after they were reportedly threatened by the student involved in the incident. According to a reliable source the student had tried to assault the teacher after the incident.

The incident occurred after the student reportedly tried to enter another class but had been stopped by the teacher. The student then had assaulted the teacher. The teacher had shoved the student in self-defense. But the school had suspended the teacher which had sparked outrage among the rest of the teachers.

Teachers had gone on strike and refused to attend classes in the morning session.

Education ministry had stepped in to resolve the incident before the teacher had returned to his home country.

It remains unclear whether the school had taken any action against the student.
