Majeediyyaa classes resume after teachers end strike

Secondary grade classes have resumed after teachers ended their strike though their concerns over a lack of safe environment remain, Majeediyyaa school said Wednesday.

The teachers went on strike after a colleague was suspended on Monday over a scuffle with a student.

The expatriate teacher has since resigned and left the Maldives after he was reportedly threatened by the student involved in the incident.

The mathematics teacher had quit and returned to his home country along with his wife who had also been teaching in the same school.

The couple had decided to leave after they were reportedly threatened by the student involved in the incident. According to a reliable source the student had tried to assault the teacher after the incident.

The school's lead teacher told AVAS on Wednesday that the teachers had ended the strike and classes have remained but insisted that their concerns remain. The decision was made as the teachers did not wish the strike to affect their students so close to the exam, the teacher added.

"A team of parents met with the teachers yesterday [Tuesday]. They [parents] urged the teachers to resume classes so close to exams," the lead teacher explained.

The incident occurred after the student reportedly tried to enter another class but had been stopped by the teacher. The student then had assaulted the teacher. The teacher had shoved the student in self-defense. But the school had suspended the teacher which had sparked outrage among the rest of the teachers.

It remains unclear whether the school had taken any action against the student.
