Maldives capital no longer congested, says pres

Maldives president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Wednesday claimed to have eased the congestion in the capital Male insisting that his visionary government had found ways to make and find space in the most densely populated city in the world.

Speaking during a ceremony to launch a book showcasing national developmental projects during the four years of his government, president Yameen admitted that Male was once congested and over populated with people and traffic.

However, in the past four years, careful and visionary planning by the government has transformed the capital.

Noting the construction of the first 25 storey building in the capital, president Yameen said his government had found space to accommodate mega development projects of such nature.

"When you look around Male you'll see pollution and traffic which are challenges that come with development. But we have found ways to address and minimize them," he explained.

President also said the capital would yet witness the construction of "many" 25 storey buildings which he said was proof that Male had the space.

"By the grace of God we will see many 25 storey buildings with the 2018 presidential elections. This is only possible because we have shown that there is space."

The book launched titled Ravvehi Tharaqqee, compiled by the President’s Office, chronicling the highlights of national developmental projects, especially the major projects undertaken in the past four years.

The book is aimed at providing information on groundbreaking mega-projects carried out during the current administration’s term, as part of President Yameen’s development agenda. The book includes information on the completed projects and those currently underway across the country. The book is primarily targeted for researchers and University students, facilitating them to get in-depth information on the advancement during the current administration’s four years.

Apart from the information on developmental projects undertaken during President Yameen’s current term, the book also encompasses information on projects undertaken from the year 2009 to 2013.

Ravvehi Tharaqqee was compiled with data based on information provided by the respective Ministries, State Companies, City Councils, Atoll Councils, and Island Councils.
