Authorities block parliament vicinity, tightens security

Maldives Police Service has cordoned off the vicinity surrounding People's Majilis, the local parliament, while increasing the security detail on-site.

Authorities have tightened security surrounding parliament area following word of the dozen deposed lawmakers making appearance at People's Majilis on Wednesday.

The deposed lawmakers have previously attempted to enter the premises of Maldives parliament. However, they were interrupted by flanks of military and police officers often ending in violent altercations.

Conventionally parliament sittings start at 09:00hrs on designated days but Wednesday's sitting has been tabled for 13:00hrs.

The dozen lawmakers decided on attending Wednesday's parliament sitting after Maldives Supreme Court verdict regarding their seats. According to the deposed lawmakers the verdict of Maldives apex court proves they have not been evicted of their seats.
