Opposition claims increasing allowance for elderly citizens

Opposition coalition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih states the allowances provided from state for elderly citizens should be increased.

While addressing on the subject, Solih said the opposition is attempting to find an effective way of increasing the said allowances for elderly citizens.

Addressing the people of Laamu atoll Gan on Tuesday evening, Solih assured elderly citizen's allowance of MVR5,000 will remain effective under an opposition's administration. Solih said a special committee will be researching efficient ways on increasing the allowances.

"We are already attempting to find ways on how we can increase the allowances for elderly citizens," Solih said.

The special allowance for elderly citizens was first initiated by former president Mohamed Nasheed, providing an amount of MVR2,500 for every citizen above the age of 65 years. Under president Abdulla Yameen's administration the allowance was increased to MVR5,000 per elderly citizen.
