RaajjeTV claims BroadCom fine as attempt to destroy station

Opposition aligned RaajjeTV has alleged the recent of fines slapped on the channel by Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) was an attempt to destroy the station.

RaajjeTV in a press release alleged broadcasting commission was guilty of masterminding a cheap attempt to destroy the station and its operations. Earlier the station had expressed concern to the commission regarding information of attempts within Broadcasting Commission to interrupt the channel's operations.

The often scrutinized station had also alleged the attempt a carefully planned move to impede the channel's operations prior to the crunch presidential elections. RaajjeTV accuses broadcasting commission of attempting to sideline the channel from covering the election proceedings.

The channel was fined for airing content that violated the broadcasting regulations, according to commission.

RaajjeTV's latest fine comes as a result of airing a public speech by an opposition activist allegedly defaming the incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as well as for the activist's provocative manner that may have posed threat to national security, according Broadcasting Commission.
