Rise in recorded crime last year

The rise in crime in Maldives is accelerating, according to police figures, which show an increase in offenses recorded by the police compared to the previous year.

In a press conference held on Tuesday, Police spokesperson said drug-related offenses were on the rise last year, compared to 2017. The rise in recorded number of drug-related offenses owes to successful drug sting operations carried out by the police, and repeated offenses of the same nature, said Izmiya Zahir.

Robbery, burglary, drug and traffic offenses have gone up in number although the rate of general offenses have gone down compared to 2017, according to the figures released on Tuesday.
