Maldives Customs Service has nabbed a foreign national entering the Maldives with MVR 1.6 million worth of drugs.

The 31-year old man arrived at Velana International Airport last Monday, and was checked by customs officials due to suspicious behavior.

Upon investigation, packets containing 2,084 pills of what is suspected to be drugs were discovered in his luggage. The man and the drugs he was caught with were handed over to the police.

Laboratory investigations revealed that the pills were a type of drug known as Amphetamine (Ya Ba), a potent central nervous system stimulant. The drugs weighing 282g have a street value of MVR 1.6 million.

Customs last week revealed the statistics of the drugs seized during 2018. Last year, 83 cases of attempted drug import were recorded, amounting to 32kg of substance.
