MIFCO van robbed in broad daylight by masked men

A van from fish company MIFCO was stopped on the outer street of capital Male' by a group of masked men on Wednesday afternoon.

The van was traveling from MIFCO head office in Maafannu to the airport carrying MVR two million when it was suddenly stopped by the group after smashing the van's windows using an axe. After stopping the van, the group threatened the people inside the van before snatching the cash and fleeing from the scene.

Managing Director of MIFO Ismail Fauzy told AVAS that the funds were being transported from MIFCO head office to Felivaru island. Along with the driver of the van, a MIFCO employee were inside the van at the time of the incident, and sustained minor injuries when the windows were broken.

Last month, a laptop was stolen from MIFCO head office after unknown people broke into the building. The number of incidents of mugging and snatching large amounts of money have increased in Male' in the past few weeks.
