Home Minister to be questioned on implementing capital punishment

A motion has been filed at the parliament to summon Home Minister Imran Abdulla to inquire regarding the government's policies on carrying out capital punishment in the Maldives.

The motion was filed by opposing PPM member and Mahibadhoo MP, Ahmed 'Tom' Tariq.

In the paper submitted at the parliament by Tariq, it stated that a Minister at the President's Office, Ahmed Naseem had declared at an international meeting that the current government will not carry out capital punishment.

MP Tariq called to inquire from the Home Minister what the government’s policy is on implementing capital punishment on those who have been sentenced to death penalty under Shariah law.

The parliament previously issued a notice to summon the Home Minister for questioning regarding the events that took place on 7th February 2012, when then president Mohamed Naheed resigned from presidency amid unrest. The Minister will be questioned regarding the steps being taken by the government to avoid a similar situation from occurring again.

However, the notice has passed the 14 day mark and the Minister has not presented himself to the parliament thus far.
