Minister Shahid scheduled to attend parliament next Wednesday

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has been scheduled to attend the parliament next Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Parliament, Secretary General Fathimath Niusha said Minister Shahid will be answering MP Abdulla Jabir's inquiry on the government's progress in re-establishing ties with Qatar.

Maldives cut diplomatic ties with Qatar during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's tenure.

According to Parliament rules, if a person is being summoned to the parliament, a 14-day notice period excluding government holidays will be granted to the individual to present themselves. However, the notice issued to Minster Shahid has already expired.

Secretary General Niusha said the Minister failed to present himself at the parliament within the notice period due to being out of country and his hectic schedule.

While the parliament also issued notice to Transport Minister Aishath Nahula and Home Minister Imran Abdulla, their period of notice has also expired. Minister Imran is being summoned to inquire regarding the steps being taken by the government to avoid a circumstance similar to what led to former president Mohamed Nasheed's resignation, while while Minister Aisha is being summoned due to citizens being fined for parking violations while a reasonable solution for the parking issue in Male' has not been offered by the government.
