Sri Lanka Prime Minister arrives on state visit

Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe arrived in the Maldives Monday on an official visit to the island nation following a formal invitation by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih,

The Prime Minister on his first state visit to the archipelago, was welcomed upon his arrival at Velaanaa International Airport by Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.

The two governments are expected to hold official talks in an array of areas to enhance long standing bilateral relations. During the visit, as many as three bilateral agreements are scheduled to be signed between the two countries before Mr Wickremesinghe addresses the parliament Tuesday morning.

Maldives Foreign Ministry had revealed that one of the agreements on visa facilitation would greatly benefit Maldivians studying in Sri Lanka.

The remaining two agreements would be enhancing existing cooperation in the fields of youth development and social protection.

The Prime Minister would also Chair the two day Indian Ocean Conference 2019 hosted by the Maldives slated to begin Tuesday.

Mr Wickremesinghe is accompanied by his spouse, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe and a delegation of top officials from the Sri Lankan government.
