COVID-19: Random sample taken within community tests positive

The government has revealed that a person has tested positive from among the random samples taken to understand the extent of community spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives.

Authorities have been taking random samples in the capital to find out additional contacts of known clusters that have tested positive for the virus and to understand the extent of the spread of pandemic within the community. In this regard, dozens of samples were taken in the capital city over the past few days.

The government’s main hospital IGMH’s medical doctor, Dr Ibrahim Afzal on Wednesday said one random sample has tested positive for the virus thus far. Dr Afzal further said it is probable that more samples will test positive for the illness in the coming days.

The total number of people who contracted the virus has now reached 280, including 126 locals, and 152 foreigners. 17 people have recovered from the disease in the Maldives, and the first COVID-19 related fatality was recorded on Wednesday.
