Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has developed a quarantine facility for migrant foreign workers.
According to HDC, their Distribution Centre was converted into a quarantine facility. The facility features 667 beds, a lavatory block and bathrooms, said HDC.
The largest clusters of COVID-19 detected in the Maldives are among expatriates living in congested and vulnerable conditions.
On Monday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that the government will be relocating the expatriates living in such conditions to better accommodation facilities in Gulhifalhu and Hulhumale'. In that regard, over 3000 expatriates will be relocated during the initial phase. The president further revealed that work is underway to repatriate1500 undocumented migrant workers from Bangladesh.
A total of 557 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives out of which more than half are Bangladeshi nationals.
