COVID-19: Five people apprehended after fleeing from quarantine facility

Five people who were quarantined at a designated facility in Here’there’ Island Resort fled on Wednesday night. This is the first time such an incident has occured in a quarantine facility in the Maldives.

Assistant Police Commissioner Abdulla Fairoosh warned the public against such actions. APC Fairoosh said quarantine facilities are not prisons, and that all persons at the facilities voluntarily agreed to be housed at the facilities. Therefore, each person at such facilities has civic duties that they must fulfill, said ACP Fairoosh, adding that action will be taken against those who endanger the safety of others.

All five people have now been apprehended.

Here’there' Quarantine Facility was developed in the southernmost Addu to quarantine people who travel to Addu city and to isolate people infected with COVID-19. No positive cases have been identified from the atoll thus far.
