Maldives police to use tasers as a de-escalation tool

Maldives Police Service is preparing to introduce tasers as a de-escalation tool.

In a tweet published on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said the police are starting to trial the provisions of Conducted Electric Weapon (CEW) as a force option with the aim of further improving officer safety and public protection. He further said that the non-lethal weapon would be used in situations which poses potential harm to members of the public and police officers.

He further said the weapons will be used as per the regulations and with increased accountability as is the case with other force options, and that police officers using the tool will be wearing body cameras.

This is the first time stun guns are being used in the Maldives.
