The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has revealed that over 200 frontline workers are among the 1204 COVID-19 cases identified in the Maldives.
The Maldives has recorded 1274 positive cases of COVID-19 thus far.
Speaking at NEOC's daily press briefing on Friday, Dr. Ibrahim Afzal from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said 239 frontline workers have tested positive for COVID-19 thus far. The most number of cases involving frontline workers were identified on May 8, with 51 people testing positive. May 19 also recorded 22 positive cases of frontline workers, and 16 cases on May 20. 12 cases were recorded both on May 21 and 22.
"Frontliners are those providing health and security services as well as other essential services. For example, those delivering gas from STO are also counted as frontline workers," said Dr. Afzal.
A large number of MNDF officers as well as police are also among those infected, as well as health care professionals and employees at state-owned enterprises.
