Expatriate labourers protested in the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale’ and confronted the police on Monday.
Police said expatriates employed Island Expert Private Limited had protested over not having been paid their wages. The expatriates confronted the police who attended the scene to deescalate the situation. Some officers were injured in the confrontation and police vehicles were vandalised.
However, the police have controlled the unrest and dispersed the protest, and arrested over forty violent instigators.
During the current pandemic situation of COVID-19, expatriates have been instigating protests since May over unpaid wages.
