Daily COVID-19 stats: 30 new cases, 19 recoveries

The Maldives on Wednesday recorded 30 new cases of COVID-19.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the new cases are of 29 Maldivians and 1 foreigner. This brings the total number of positive cases to 2,831.

HPA also announced 19 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,321. The number of active cases is 482, and 14 deaths have been recorded to date.

64,239 samples have been tested for COVID-19. Authorities said 423 individuals are currently at isolation facilities while 32 individuals are at quarantine facilities.

The Maldives relaxed most of the precautionary measures implemented to stop the spread of the virus after the number of positive cases began declining. However, the numbers seem to be on the rise once again. The archipelago recorded the most number of cases in a single day after lockdown was relaxed earlier on Friday with 64 new cases. Despite the numbers, the optimistic island nation reopened its borders to tourists on Wednesday after having been closed for almost four months.
