Daily COVID-19 stats: Most positive cases since lockdown relief

The Maldives on Thursday recorded 68 new cases of COVID-19. This is the most number of positive cases recorded since the lockdown imposed on capital Male’ was lifted.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the new cases are of 47 Maldivians and 21 foreigners. This brings the total number of positive cases to 2,899.

HPA also announced 18 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,339. The number of active cases is 530, and 15 deaths have been recorded to date, the most recent on Thursday afternoon.

65,176 samples have been tested for COVID-19, out of which 900 samples were tested over the past 24 hours. Authorities said 440 individuals are currently at isolation facilities while 32 individuals are at quarantine facilities.

The Maldives relaxed most of the precautionary measures implemented to stop the spread of the virus after the number of positive cases began declining. However, the numbers seem to be on the rise once again. The archipelago recorded the second most number of cases in a single day after lockdown was relaxed earlier on Friday with 64 new cases. Despite the numbers, the optimistic island nation reopened its borders to tourists on Wednesday after having been closed for almost four months.
