COVID-19: Second death over 24 hours; toll rises to 18

A Maldivian national passed away on Sunday due to COVID-19.

According to the Health Protection Agency, HPA, a 89 year old local male admitted at the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility pased away at 8:57 pm on Sunday night. This is the 18th COVID-19 death in the Maldives, and the second death in 24 hours. A 52 year old local female who tested positive for the virus passed away late Saturday night.

The number of positive cases in the Maldives have been increasing rapidly over the past few days, with the largest spike in positive cases recorded over the past 24 hours. 215 people tested positive for the virus on Sunday, increasing the tally to 4,164. Authorities expect the numbers to continue rising until the end of September.
