Military training at Girifushi Island has been halted after a large number of MNDF personnel tested positive for COVID-19.
Four officers of Maldives National Defense Force at Girifushi Island earlier tested positive for COVID-19 after which the island was placed on monitoring status. Entry and exit from the island was restricted and other officers on the island were subsequently tested.
AVAS has learnt that 27 MNDF personnel have since tested positive for the virus. Training at the island has therefore been temporarily suspended. No comments have been made regarding the issue by MNDF thus far.
MNDF officers play a crucial role as front liners during the current health crisis being faced by the country. MNDF personnel are in charge of transporting COVID-19 patients from one place to the other, and quarantine and isolation facilities are monitored by the police.
