COVID-19: Recoveries cross 10,000-mark

The number of COVID-19 recoveries in the Maldives have crossed the 10,000-mark.

While 223 days have passed since the Maldives recorded its first COVID-19 case, the current tally of positive cases is at 11,178. Over 90 percent of those infected with the virus have now recovered, and 1,138 cases are currently active. Out of these, 43 are hospitalised, including three receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit. 36 COVID-19 deaths have been recorded to date, with the most recent death recorded earlier on Saturday morning.

The Maldives’ situation was grave earlier in August due to a significant spike in the number of positive cases. 3,900 cases and 12 deaths were recorded in August alone. The daily number of cases had hovered in three-digit figures during August.

The situation in the Maldives has considerably improved over the past 45 days. Only 24 cases were recorded over the past 24 hours. With the decline in the number of recorded cases, authorities on Saturday shorted the curfew hours by one hour, and extended the business hours for local cafes and restaurants.
