Man arrested with 130 kgs of drugs set free; police to seek appeal

Man arrested with over a hundred kilograms of drugs from a boat docked near Hulhumale’ has been released by court order. Police released the 42-year-old Shaheeb Ibrahim after detaining him for attempting to smuggle 130 kilograms of drugs into the Maldives.

Upon receiving information regarding the attempt to smuggle drugs via a boat, a special sea operation was conducted by the police in which seven individuals were arrested. Among the arrestees were men with ages between 25 years and 48 years as well as an underage child. The suspected masterminds behind smuggling are identified as 42-year- old Shaheeb Ibrahim and 48-year-old Ahmed Moosa. Shaheeb Ibrahim is a council member of People’s National Congress (PNC).

Once the remand period of both men expired, a court hearing further extended Ahmed Moosa’s detainment period. However, Shaheeb Ibrahim was set free with certain conditions.

The police said the man was initially remanded into custody based on the evidence filed against him. His release was ordered by the court after further evidence was filed against him. The police said that the court's decision would be appealed.
