Test flight lands successfully at Hoarafushi Airport

The first test flight successfully landed at newly developed Hoarafushi Airport on Monday morning.

A special ceremony was held at the airport to mark the milestone. The ceremony was attended by Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem and Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Ahmed Azim as well as other top officials from MTCC and residents of Hoarafushi.

The development of Hoarafushi Airport was initiated by the former government of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. An area of 16 hectares was dredged for MVR 64 million for the purpose. The airport is being developed by state owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for MVR 198 million. The airport will have a 1.2 kilometer long runway, a 8635 square meter apron as well as a taxiway, service roads, parking area and a fire access road. A 720 meter area has been fenced to separate the airport from other areas of the island.

The airport will be officially opened by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday, on the occasion of the administations’s second anniversary.
