Main suspect of May 6 blast arrested

A third individual has been arrested in connection to the IED blast that left Speaker and former president of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed in critical condition.

Nasheed was taken to ADK Hospital Thursday night after he sustained several injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the blast occurred when an IED strapped to a motorcycle detonated. Multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital, and he remains in the Intensive Care Unit.

The police on Friday released the image of a person believed to be a suspect connected to the blast, and two people were arrested form Male' and Hulhumale' the same day. They have been identified Mujaaz Ahmed from capital Male' and Thahumeen Ahmed from Ga Kondey. Thahumeen is the owner of the motorcycle that was used in the blast. The suspect whose image was publicized was not among those arrested.

The police on Sunday morning arrested a third individual believed to be the main suspect of the case. The man was arrested in Hulhumle' and has been identified by some sources as Ahmed Adhuham from V. Thinadhoo. He is believed to be the individual pictured on the CCTV image. A source who does not wish to be named said Adhuham was previously arrested on suspicions of attempting to cause a blast but was released due to lack of evidence.

The police have previously said a fourth individual connected to the blast has also been identified. However, no information on the person have been shared thus far.
